20 Cebu areas suspend classes due to incessant rains

All 22 major sea ports in the entire Cebu Province will put up anti-illegal drugs offices as the local government here intensifies its own localized "drug war."

CEBU CITY — At least 20 local governments in Cebu suspended classes on Wednesday, Feb. 1, due to bad weather.

Among those that suspended classes were Barili, Cordova, Sogod, Catmon, Carmen, Compostela, Consolacion, Minglanilla, San Fernando, Aloguinsan, Asturias, Tuburan, Pinamungahan, and Balamban towns, a report from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) said.

The cities of Danao, Talisay, Naga, Carcar, and Toledo also cancelled classes.

Meanwhile, 23 families in an upland village of Maigang in Barili evacuated to safer grounds after detecting huge cracks and soil movement believed to have been caused by the incessant rains.

The Jan. 31 inspection by the PDRRMO said the cracks damaged infrastructure and portions of the road rendering it impassable to vehicles.

The PDRRMO and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau are further conducting assessment on the area as the soil movement continues.

Maigang is located some 63 kilometers southwest of Cebu City.

It was raining throughout the night and early in the morning in Cebu City. The rains stopped at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, but the skies continued to have dark clouds.
