WASHINGTON 鈥 President Joe Biden said on Monday that relations between Washington and Beijing were not weakened by the United States鈥 downing of a suspected Chinese spy balloon over the weekend.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Biden said it was always his view that the balloon needed to be shot down 鈥渁s soon as it was appropriate.鈥
Asked if the balloon incident weakens US-China relations, Biden said: 鈥淣o. We made it clear to China what we鈥檙e going to do. They understand our position. We鈥檙e not going to back off.鈥
Biden continued: 鈥淲e did the right thing and it鈥檚 not a question of weakening or strengthening 鈥 it鈥檚 reality.鈥
