DILG, India ink pact granting $50,000 to qualified LGUs

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) signed an agreement with the government of India granting qualified local government units (LGUs) $50,000 in aid for infrastructure projects and development facilities.

According to DILG in a statement on Wednesday, Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos Jr. and Indian Ambassador to the Philippines Shambhu Kumaran signed the said memorandum of agreement on Feb. 7.

Abalos said that under the agreement, India would provide $50,000 in aid for qualified LGUs to finance infrastructure projects like roads, bridges, and community centers to schools, health, and development facilities.

“This is a massive reinforcement in our current efforts towards full devolution and to further improve public service in the communities,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Indian Ambassador said the agreement is a milestone of fruitful cooperation between the countries.

“I would like to thank the Secretary for his vision, leadership, and decisive intervention to make sure that this agreement came to fruition very quickly,” Kumaran said.
