Masbate LGU inspects 30 critical infrastructures after magnitude 6 quake

MANILA, Philippines — Officers from the city government of Masbate inspected a total of 30 establishments described as critical infrastructure following the magnitude 6 earthquake that struck the province on Thursday.

Included in the inspection team of the local government unit (LGU) are Rapid Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (RDANA) team, which is composed of the Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Office, City Engineering Office, Bureau of Fire Protection Masbate City, and the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

“[RDANA] visited the initial 30 critical infrastructure and commercial buildings to assess any damage incurred by the magnitude 6.0 earthquake that shook the City of Masbate earlier this morning,” wrote the Masbate City government in a Facebook post.

Among these buildings, 15 sustained minor damage, including hairline cracks on the floors and walls.

“The remaining 15 were noted to have no damage to their structural integrity,” said the Masbate LGU.

The RDANA is still assessing the infrastructure in the city.

All residents are advised to be vigilant for aftershocks and follow protocols on earthquake preparedness and response such as duck-cover-hold and earthquake evacuation plans.

Masbate City experienced Intensity VII during the quake, which is classified by state seismologists as “destructive,” as per the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) Earthquake Intensity Scale.

“Most people are frightened and run outdoors. People find it difficult to stand in upper floors,” said the Phivolcs description of Intensity VII.
