Magnitude 5.9 quake rocks Davao de Oro

DAVAO CITY — A 5.9-magnitude earthquake with an epicenter at 8 km southwest of New Bataan town in Davao de Oro jolted parts of Southern Mindanao on Tuesday afternoon.
The temblor struck at 2:02 p.m. and was felt as far as South Cotabato and Agusan del Norte, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.
The earthquake, which was tectonic in origin, had a depth of focus of 11 kilometers. It came a day after a series of strong quakes in Davao de Oro and more than a month after the 6.0-magnitude earthquake that damaged a portion of the provincial hospital building.

Article continues after this advertisementThe March 7 earthquake was felt at Intensity IV in Monkayo in Davao de Oro and Tagum City in Davao del Norte; Intensity III at Davao City; and Intensity II at Don Marcelino in Davao Occidental.
Meanwhile, Phivolcs issued the following:
- Instrumental Intensity V – Nabunturan, Davao de Oro
- Instrumental Intensity III – Malungon, Sarangani
- Instrumental Intensity II – Davao City, Davao Del Sur; Don Marcelino, Davao Occidental; Tupi, South Cotabato
- Instrumental Intensity I – Kadingilan, Malaybalay, Talakag, Bukidnon; Magpet, Kidapawan City, Cotabato; Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental; Alabel, Sarangani; Suralla,
Koronadal City, Norala, South Cotabato; Columbio, Sultan Kudarat; Bislig City, Surigao del Sur
Phivolcs said damage and aftershocks were to be expected from the strong quake.
Initial information from Phivolcs indicated that the earthquake was 6.2-magnitude.
