Palace reminds public of 5-day break in April as nation observes Holy Week, Araw ng Kagitingan

MANILA, Philippines — Malacañang on Tuesday reminded the public that there will be a five-day break in April as the nation commemorates Holy Week and the Day of Valor or “Araw ng Kagitingan.”

In a Facebook post, the Official Gazette of the Philippines said April 6, 7, and 10 this year had been declared regular holidays under Proclamation No. 90 issued in 2022.

Maundy Thursday and Good Friday fall on April 6 and 7, respectively. The celebration of the Day of Valor, or Araw ng Kagitingan, is on April 9. Since it falls on a Sunday this year, the government moved the regular holiday to Monday, April 10.

This means that the public may have their five-day break from April 6-10 since April 8 is Black Saturday, and April 9 is Easter Sunday.

“Gamitin natin ang pagkakataong ito upang makapagbigay ng oras sa ating mga mahal sa buhay habang nananatiling responsable sa pagsunod sa mga health at safety protocols,” the Presidential Communications Office said in a separate Facebook post.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. signed Proclamation No. 9 in November 2022, adding one more special nonworking day and moving two holidays that fell on the weekend to Monday to create more long weekends pursuant to the “principle of holiday economics.”
