The earthquake’s epicenter was traced two kilometers east of Pilar, Abra with a shallow depth of one kilometer.

Magnitude 4.6 earthquake strikes Abra, damage expected

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 4.6 earthquake hit Abra on Sunday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

While aftershocks are not expected, state seismologists said that damage can be anticipated resulting from the earthquake.

The earthquake was detected by Phivolcs at 5:35 a.m. and located its epicenter two kilometers northeast of Pilar in Abra.

Up to Intensity IV was felt in several areas in Abra, including the towns of Bucay, Pilar, Villariciosa, Peñarubia, San Isidro, Bangued, Bucloc, and Boliney. The same intensity was also observed in Bantay, Ilocos Sur.

According to the Phivolcs Intensity Scale, Intensity IV is “moderately strong” and is “felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors.”

Phivolcs reported the following Intensities, all in all:

Intensity IV – Bucay, Pilar, Villariciosa, Peñarubia, San Isidro, Bangued, Bucloc, and Boliney, ABRA; Bantay, Ilocos Sur

Intensity III – Tayum, San Quintin, Tineg, and Dolores, Abra; City of Vigan,  Ilocos Sur

Instrumental Intensities:

Intensity IV – City of Vigan, Ilocos Sur

Intensity III – Bangued, Abra; Narvacan, Ilocos Sur

Intensity II – Candon, Ilocos Sur
