MMDA: Most comply with exclusive motorcycle lane but many still disregard it

MANILA, Philippines — While most drivers comply with the exclusive motorcycle lane policy on Commonwealth Avenue, many are still disregarding it as violators on the first day of its implementation top 1,000, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said on Tuesday.

“Marami pa din pong nag-violate nito, mahigit isang libo,” Victor Nuñez, Director III of MMDA’s traffic enforcement group, said over Teleradyo.

(There were so many violators; more than one thousand.)

As of 9 p.m. Monday, the MMDA said a total of 1,739 violators were apprehended, including 1,033 private cars that disregarded the motorcycle lane, and 706 motorcycles that went out of their designated lane.

“But generally noong tinignan namin, marami na din po talagang sumusunod doon sa kanilang mga designated lane at talagang may iilan pa din na mga pasaway na hindi marunong rumespeto sa linya ng ibang motorista,” Nuñez added.

(But generally, when we looked at it, many drivers were now following their designated lane, but there are those unruly  drivers who do not know how to respect the lane of other motorists.)

Nuñez also urged motorists to follow the new policy, stressing it was done for their own sake.

“We are always appealing sa motorista, maging private vehicles, to drivers and motorcycle riders na respetuhin itong bagong polisiya kasi ginawa naman natin ito para sa kanilang kaligtasan to prevent road crash incidents in Commonwealth,” he said.

(We are always appealing to motorists, be they private vehicle drivers or motorcycle riders, to respect the new policy because we did it for their safety and to prevent road crash incidents in Commonwealth Ave.)

The policy was implemented on Commonwealth Avenue on Monday, March 27.

MMDA metes a P500 fine for private vehicle drivers and motorcycle riders, as well as P1,200 for public utility vehicle drivers if they violate the new policy.
