TD Amang accelerates toward Catanduanes as more areas are placed under Signal No. 1

LEGAZPI CITY — Classes in the Bicol provinces, except Masbate, were suspended on Tuesday afternoon, April 11, due to the threat of Tropical Depression Amang, which was forecast to bring heavy to intense rains until Thursday evening.

In an advisory, Albay Governor Edcel Greco Lagman said classes in pre-schools and elementary, private and public, are suspended starting 1 p.m.

Lagman said all local disaster operation centers were advised to conduct monitoring and implement localized evacuation in areas exposed to storm surge, flood, lahar, flash flood, and landslide.

In Albay’s Daraga and Camalig towns, classes from kinder to Grade 12 and Alternative Learning System were suspended.

In Sorsogon, classes in elementary and secondary in both public and private schools were suspended on Tuesday in Bulusan, Magallanes, Castilla, Casiguran, and Bulan towns and Sorsogon City.

Classes at all levels in Talisay town in Camarines Norte were also suspended as of 11 a.m.

Camarines Sur Governor Vincenzo Renato Luigi Villafuerte ordered the suspension of classes at all levels in public and private schools for Wednesday, April 12.

Due to the possible inclement weather, classes at all levels in Catanduanes province were also suspended Tuesday.

In an advisory, the local government said that as of 10 a.m., all 11 municipalities in the province released localized class suspension as a precautionary measure, after the Bicol disaster risk reduction and management office raised the “red alert” status in Catanduanes.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in its 11 a.m update that Amang accelerated as it moved westward towards the coast of Catanduanes.

It was spotted at 270 kilometers east of Virac town with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph), and gustiness of up to 70 kph.

Pagasa hoisted Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal (TCWS) No. 1. in Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Albay, Camarines Sur, Camarines Norte and Masbate, including Ticao Island and Burias Island.

TCWS No. 1 was also raised in Quezon (Pitogo, San Andres, Buenavista, San Francisco, Calauag, Infanta, Lopez, Catanauan, Mulanay, Guinayangan, Unisan, General Luna, Plaridel, Quezon, Alabat, Sampaloc, Padre Burgos, Macalelon, Mauban, General Nakar, Perez, Agdangan, Gumaca, Atimonan, Real, San Narciso, Tagkawayan, Pagbilao, City of Tayabas) including Pollilo Islands, Marinduque, Eastern Samar, Northern Samar, Samar, and Biliran.
