Four passengers hurt after MRT-3 train activates emergency brakes

MANILA, Philippines — A defective train on the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) activated its automatic emergency brake while en route to Boni Station in Mandaluyong City on Wednesday, injuring at least four passengers.

According to the MRT-3 in an advisory, the train’s automatic train protection (ATP) system activated its emergency brakes to stop a defective index while heading towards Boni station.

“The defective train resumed movement by 9:16 a.m., upon intervention by on-board technicians,” said MRT-3 management.

“The train has also been removed for further troubleshooting by MRT-3’s maintenance provider,” it added.

A total of four passengers who sustained minor injuries were then provided with first aid emergency medical technicians, while stations and security personnel were instructed to provide assistance to passengers on board the train.

Assistant Secretary for Railways and MRT-3 officer-in-charge Jorjette Aquino, for her part, apologized to all affected passengers.
