Back-rider dead, 1 hurt in motorcycle-van collision in Batangas

A rider dies while another was seriously hurt in an accident involving two motorcycles in Batangas province

LUCENA CITY — A motorcycle rider died and another one was injured on Monday, May 8, after their vehicle was hit by a van along the Maharlika Highway in Sto. Tomas City in Batangas province.

Batangas police in a report Tuesday said Marjon Medialdia, 23, was driving his motorcycle with Christopher De Guzman, 37, as a back-rider when they were allegedly bumped from behind around 6:15 p.m. by a van driven by Agripino Espiritu in one section of the highway in Barangay San Vicente.

The two riders suffered serious injuries and were taken to Laurel District Medical Hospital in neighboring Tanauan City but De Guzman died along the way.

The police are conducting an investigation while Espiritu remains in their custody.

The police did not say if the victims were wearing crash helmets for protection as mandated under the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009.
