Mati City school on lockdown as 2 students test positive for coronavirus

DAVAO CITY鈥揅lasses of a public high school in Mati City, Davao Oriental have been suspended on Friday as two students tested positive for COVID-19.

The Mati City Incident Command Center ordered a lockdown of Matiao National High School in Matiao village, after 16 students showed flu-like symptoms, with two testing positive of the virus in a rapid antigen test, the local government鈥檚 information office said.

A disinfection operation was immediately conducted by the city disaster risk reduction and management office after students and teaching staff of the school were sent home and advised to undergo home quarantine.

The 16 students belong to a single classroom.

鈥淐lasses will resume once DepEd (Department of Education ) and Mati IMT (Incident Management Team) have fully determined and ascertained the safety and security of the students and teaching staff of the said school,鈥 the city information office said in a statement.

On Friday, the city logged three new active cases of COVID-19, two of whom are female health workers who are fully vaccinated and had booster shots. The third case is a 42-year-old unvaccinated male. All three are symptomatic and are undergoing home quarantine.

Four patients have also recovered, with the current COVID-19 tally in Mati City pegged at eight.

The city has logged at least 4,436 cases of COVID-19 since the onset of the pandemic in 2020, with 137 deaths.
