DILG chief orders swift probe into Manila Central Post Office fire

MANILA, Philippines — Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. instructed the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) on Wednesday to prioritize the investigation into the fire that razed the Manila Central Post Office.

Based on reports, the fire, which started in the basement of the iconic building, was confirmed by authorities at 11:41 p.m. last May 21 and was extinguished 30 hours later at 6:33 a.m. on Tuesday.

According to the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) chief, the BFP should determine the cause of the fire that damaged assets worth P300 million, including parcels and national identification cards.

“We must get to the bottom of this unfortunate incident at all costs and as soon as possible. That is why I am calling on the BFP to prioritize the investigation of the Manila Central Post Office fire and exhaust all necessary means to determine the cause of this incident that destroyed one of the country’s architectural heritages and national historical landmarks,” Abalos said in a statement.

Reports also revealed that 18 people were injured during the fire incident — 17 of whom were BFP personnel and volunteers.

Upon hearing this, Abalos expressed his gratitude to firefighters and volunteers and instructed the fire agency to assist those injured.

“I commend the gallant men and women of the BFP, as well as our volunteer firefighters who have shown heroism and courage in the face of adversity. Your heroism is priceless. I salute and sincerely thank you all,” he said.
