Tropical Storm Chedeng intensifies further; may leave PAR Monday

MANILA, Philippines — Tropical storm ‘Chedeng’ (international name ‘Guchol’) further intensified on Wednesday, but is still not expected to affect the country directly, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Administration (Pagasa).

Chedeng strengthened from a tropical depression into a tropical storm on Tuesday night and is expected to leave the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) by Monday or Tuesday next week.

According to Pagasa weather specialist Obet Badrina, Chedeng was last spotted 1,060 kilometers east of Southeastern Luzon with maximum sustained winds of 75 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 90 kph.

“Base sa pinakahuling pagtataya natin, possible na lumabas ng Philippine area of responsibility ang bagyong Chedeng araw ng Lunes o Martes, at napakaliit pa rin ng tiyansa na ito ay tumama sa ating bansa,” he added.

(Based on our latest forecast, tropical storm Chedeng may leave the Philippine area of responsibility on Monday or Tuesday, and there is still very little chance that it will hit our country.)

With this, no tropical cyclone wind signals are currently hoisted.

However, Chedeng may still strengthen the effects of the southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat,” but would also still depend on the movement and intensity of Chedeng in the following days.

The southwest monsoon brings cloudy skies, rain to Palawan, and partly cloudy skies with thunderstorms in Metro Manila and Luzon.
