Mayon unrest leads to evacuation of over 14,000- NDRRMC

MANILA, Philippines — Over 14,000 people were evacuated due to the unrest in Mayon Volcano, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said on Monday.

In its latest situational report, the NDRRMC said a total of 14,376 people from 21 barangays (villages) in Albay’s six municipalities were placed in 22 evacuation centers.

The NDRRMC also said the Department of Social Welfare and Development provided P20.1 million worth of assistance, such as food, family food packs, modular tents, and sleeping kits, among others.

Last Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) classified Mayon Volcano under Alert Level 3 due to “potential explosive activity happening within days or weeks.”

Alert Level 3 is declared when a volcano’s magma is near or at the surface, and its activity could lead to hazardous eruption in weeks.  Under Alert Level 3, the danger zone could only be expanded up to eight kilometers from the active crater.

The entire province of Albay has since declared a state of calamity.
