Phivolcs: Continuous increase in volcanic earthquakes observed in Mayon

Phivolcs says Mayon had 5 volcanic earthquakes, and 361 rockfall events in the last 24 hours

MANILA, Philippines — State seismologists on Tuesday said the Mayon Volcano has shown a continuous increase in terms of volcanic earthquakes for the past two days.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the Mayon Volcano logged 267 volcano earthquakes from 5:00 am on Monday (July 17) to 5:00 am on Tuesday (July 18).

On Monday, Phivolcs reported that the volcano recorded 184 volcanic earthquakes — which was a sharp uptick from the recorded 39 tremors over the weekend.

Meanwhile, latest data from the state volcanologists indicated that there were 238 rockfall events and sulfur dioxide flux of 1,689 metric tons from the volcano.

Three dome-collapse pyroclastic density current (PDCs) events were also logged from the volcano. PDC refers to mixtures of fragmented volcanic particles, hot gases and ash that rush down the volcanic slopes or rapidly outward from a source vent at high speeds.

Mayon Volcano has been under Alert Level 3 since June 8, with the unrest seen to last for a few months based on the volcano monitor’s observations.
