MANILA, Philippines — Cagayan de Oro 2nd District Representative Rufus Rodriguez hopes President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. will discuss the Mindanao Railway Project in his second State of the Nation Address (Sona).

In a statement on Monday, just hours before Marcos is set to deliver his speech, Rodriguez expressed optimism the President would renew his commitment to the project.

“The Northern Mindanao Railway System has been a long-time coming. We need it in Mindanao, particularly in Cagayan de Oro, as it is poised to become the next metropolitan city,” Rodriguez said.

“President Bongbong Marcos has made the railway system for Mindanao a priority during his term, and he mentioned this in the previous Sona. I am hoping that he will reiterate this high-impact project in this year’s Sona,” he added.

During his first Sona in 2022, Marcos mentioned that his administration intended to build railway systems outside of Metro Manila and Luzon, like the 102-kilometer Mindanao Railway Project.

“This Administration is committed to finish building the current portfolio of investments – approve railway projects […] and beyond NCR, larger scale railway systems like the 102-kilometer Mindanao Railway Project; the Panay Railway Project; and the Cebu railway system will be integrated as a vital part of our transport and communications systems,” the chief executive had said.
