Coast Guard rescues 11 passengers off Surigao City

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) rescued 11 passengers of a motorbanca that sank off Surigao City over the weekend.

   

 MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) rescued 11 passengers of a motorbanca that sank off Surigao City over the weekend.

PCG said that at around 3:30 pm on Saturday, the passengers on board the motorbanca left Day-asan floating village en route to Surigao City when their vessel ran aground off Barangay Buntog Bato.

“This incident caused the engine to malfunction, resulting in the shafting and dismantling of the propeller,” the PCG said in a statement on Sunday. “Eventually, the motorbanca submerged.”

 Responding to a distress call, the PCG’s search and rescue team, onboard a rubber boat, went to the area and rescued the passengers.

PCG personnel also ensured that the rescued individuals were in good physical condition before allowing them to return home (Kirsten Segui, Inquirer.net trainee)
