NDRRMC: Death toll due to Egay climbs to 16, over 1 million locals affected

MANILA, Philippines — The death toll due to the combined effects of Typhoon Egay (international name: Doksuri) and the southwest monsoon or “habagat” has reached 16, while the number of people affected has climbed to over P1 million, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported on Sunday.
According to NDRRMC, 16 people were reportedly killed but only one of them was confirmed, while fifteen others are currently up for validation.
On the other hand, the number of injured individuals increased to 52 and missing to 20.
Based on its 8 a.m. situational report, NDRRMC said that the weather conditions affected 1,029,724 locals and 291,262 families in 2,615 barangays located in Regions 1 (Ilocos), 2 (Cagayan Valley), 3 (Central Luzon), Mimaropa (Mindoro Oriental and Occidental, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan), Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) and Region 6 (Western Visayas).
Article continues after this advertisementThe agency likewise reported that displaced locals were at 30,158. The over 15,000 took shelter in evacuation centers (ECs) while the other 15,000 were outside ECs or took refuge elsewhere.
Article continues after this advertisementThe agency also said the effects of Egay and habagat partially destroyed 21,101 homes and severely damaged 877 houses.
Moreover, the typhoon left 83 roads, 15 bridges, 112 schools, and six government facilities with infrastructure damage amounting to over P4 billion.
According to NDRRMC, in 262 cities or municipalities that experienced power outages, 54 percent or 142 areas already have electricity.
The council also said the government had distributed P64,097,582 worth of assistance to affected and displaced locals.
