Motorcyclist becomes 7th road mishap fatality in 6 days in Quezon

A motorcycle rider died early Friday (Oct. 14) after his vehicle was hit by a van along the Maharlika Highway in Sariaya town in Quezon province

LUCENA CITY — Another motorcycle rider died in a road mishap on Thursday, August 3, in Quezon bringing the number of motorbike-related deaths in the province to seven within six days.

Quezon police said in a report that a still-unidentified motorcyclist was hit at 12:55 a.m. by a truck driven by Rolando Gatucao in the intersection of the by-pass road in Barangay Tumbaga 1 in Sariaya town.

The rider suffered fatal head injuries and died on the spot. The truck driver surrendered to the police.

The report did not state if Gatucao was wearing a crash helmet, a requirement by the Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009.

On August 1, a motorcycle driven by Genesis Militante, 30, and his brother, Joshua, 27, as back-rider was hit at around 10 p.m. by an Izusu aluminum van driven by Melvin Valerio at the Maharlika Highway in Barangay Malinao Ibaba in Atimonan town.

The victims, both wearing crash helmets, suffered grave body and head injuries.

Genesis died on the way to Doña Marta Memorial District Hospital, while Joshua expired while being treated.

Investigators said the Isuzu van overtook another vehicle and occupied the opposite lane, which resulted in the collision.

He was detained and will face criminal charges.

Earlier, another motorcyclist died after he collided with a commuter bus along the Maharlika Highway in Tayabas City. The fatality was not wearing a crash helmet.

On July 29, three motorcycle riders died in separate road mishaps in Calauag town and Atimonan. The three fatalities also had no helmet for head protection.

The Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group says 4,029 motorcycle mishaps were reported in the country from January to April this year, which is almost half of the 8,342 recorded in 2022.
