2 fishers hurt in dynamite blast in Quezon

LUCENA CITY — Two brothers engaged in dynamite fishing were injured in an accidental explosion Wednesday in Polillo town in Quezon province.

In a report on Thursday, Aug. 24, the Quezon police said Gilbert San Jose, 41, and Edel, 34, were fishing at 2:40 p.m. using dynamites in the sea off Barangay Languyin.

Investigation revealed that Gilbert hesitated to throw the ignited dynamite with the sudden disappearance of his target school of fish.

Edel rushed to his brother to force him to let go of the explosive but it was too late. The dynamite exploded and caused severe body injuries to the siblings.

Fellow fishers in the area brought the wounded brothers to the hospital.

The police are conducting further investigation to determine the source of the dynamite.

Dynamite fishing, one of the illegal fishing practices, continues unabated in Lamon Bay and Tayabas Bay in Quezon, according to environmentalist group Tanggol Kalikasan.

Fishermen, who used explosives killed not only fish, but also other marine species that make up a healthy ecosystem.
