Ex-president’s eldest grandson runs for village chief in Davao

Police have arrested a suspect in the shooting of four persons here on Sunday, authorities said.

DAVAO CITY — The upcoming village polls will see one more Duterte family member entering politics.

The oldest grandson of former President Duterte and son of Davao City’s first district Rep. Paolo Duterte, told reporters he was running in the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections this October.

Omar Vincent Duterte, 29, the eldest son of Paolo with his former wife Lovelie Sangkola, has filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in the city, to run for barangay chair of Buhangin Proper, the second most populous barangay in the city after Barangay Bucana.

The young Duterte told reporters that his run for public office was part of the family decision.

“It’s what the family prepared for, (we run) where we can be of service to our neighbors and people, and since it’s the barangay elections and I live in the second district, I’m running so that I can also serve,” he told reporters here.

He is so far the youngest and the fourth generation Duterte to enter politics.

His father Paolo, the eldest son of the former President with Elizabeth Zimmerman, is now serving his second term as representative of the city’s first district.

Paolo’s sister Sara, a former mayor here, is the country’s vice president, while their youngest sibling, Sebastian, is now on his second term as city mayor.

His grandfather Rodrigo, the country’s 16th president, was the son of Vicente Duterte, a former governor of the undivided Davao province.
