MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Appointments (CA) has authorized the designation of former Court of Tax Appeals (CTA) Associate Justice Erlinda Piñera Uy as a member of the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC).
No CA member objected to Uy’s appointment during Wednesday’s deliberation on her nomination.

On July 21, Malacañang announced Uy’s appointment as representative of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines to JBC. Based on Uy’s nomination papers, her term at JBC should expire on July 9, 2027.
Prior to being Associate Justice of the CTA, Uy was a presiding judge of the Pasig City Regional Trial Court Branch 162. She also served as executive judge of the Manila Metropolitan Trial Court (MTC) and was presiding judge of Manila MTC Branch 30.

According to the Official Gazette, the JBC’s primary task is “to recommend appointees to the Judiciary and the Office of the Ombudsman for the President’s perusal.”
“The council aims to enhance the quality of the search, screening, and selection process, as well as insulate the process from undue influence of any kind.”
The Official Gazette likewise indicated that “[a]n important function of the JBC is the creation of a list of nominees for the position of Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.”
