UPLB rejects class suspension but urges everyone to remember Martial Law

LUCENA CITY — The administration of the University of the Philippines-Los Baños (UPLB) rejected the request of the University Student Council (USC) to suspend classes on Thursday, Sept. 21, to commemorate Martial law.
“Instead, UPLB admin encourages students, faculty, and staff to participate in the activities for the UP Day of Remembrance in UPLB during their free time,” the school organ, UPLB Perspective, announced on Thursday in a post on its Facebook page.
The USC and various student/youth organizations have scheduled several protest activities from Sept. 17 to 21 to commemorate the 51st anniversary of the declaration of Martial Law in the country.
Proclamation No. 1 Series of 2018 declares Sept. 21 of every year as the Day of Remembrance throughout the University of the Philippines (UP) System.
Lawyer Angelo Jimenez, UP president, in his memorandum issued on Sept. 18, called on the whole UP community to participate in “We Remember,” a series of activities that will commence with “Noises and Voices of Memory and Dissent,” a ‘noise-making’ event on Thursday from 12 noon to 1 p.m.

The event was capped with a noise barrage (honking of horns, use of any noise-making materials, etc.) within and outside the classroom, and throughout the campus.
“This activity is intended to demonstrate that the University will continue to be a bulwark of academic freedom and human rights in the light of attempts at historical revisionism and red-tagging to suppress dissent,” Jimenez said.
