Taal Volcano remains at Alert Level 1 despite vog emissions— Phivolcs

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) maintained the Alert Level 1 status of the Taal Volcano on Friday despite its emission of volcanic smog or vog since the first week of September.

Under Alert Level 1, steam or phreatic eruptions, volcanic earthquakes, thin ashfalls, and hazardous gas emissions may occur. The bureau has also cautioned the public against going to Taal Volcano Island, as well as the flying of aircraft near the crater.

The Phivolcs has also advised the following precautionary measures to help protect the public from the harmful effects of vog:

Vog is composed of sulfur dioxide gas and can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat. Notably, people with respiratory conditions, young and old, and pregnant women are at more risk.
