2 Cambodia-bound trafficking victims intercepted 鈥揃I

MANILA, Philippines — Two victims of illegal recruitment were rescued at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) reported on Thursday.
“Were it not for the vigilance of BI officers at the airports, they would have been in Cambodia right now working for employers who might harm and maltreat them as experienced by many of their countrymen who went there before them,” BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco said in a statement.
Tansingco said the two Filipinos were intercepted on September 27.
The BI’s Immigration Protection and Border Enforcement section reported that the two claimed to be employed in the Philippines, but presented doubtful documents.
The bureau also noted that the victims posed as tourists bound for Thailand, but could not detail their itinerary.
Article continues after this advertisementThe BI said the two eventually confessed that they are actually heading to work as “encoders” in Cambodia and were promised a monthly pay of P40,000.
Earlier this year, several Filipinos were rescued in Cambodia after they were reportedly mentally and physically abused by crypto scammers.
