Manila stretches liquor ban from day before BSKE until All Souls' Day

UPDATED MANILA, Philippines —The local government of Manila has declared a liquor ban in a 500-meter radius of all cemeteries in Manila from the day before the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataang elections (BSKE) on October 29, until November 2, All Souls’ Day.

The liquor ban will extend after the ban imposed by the Commission on Elections for the BSKE.

In an executive order released on Thursday, Manila Mayor Maria “Honey” Lacuña declared the ban “to take into consideration the somberness” of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.

“It is necessary to prohibit the sale of liquor and other alcoholic beverages in Manila City taking into consideration the somberness of these occasions and in light of the opening of city cemeteries to the general public, not just to Manileños,” the memorandum said.

Earlier, the order covered the entirety of the city, but an amendment released shortly limited it to the 500-meter cemetery radius. “I […] hereby order a ban on the sale and consumption of all alcoholic beverages in Manila City 29 October 2023 up to 02 November 2023, within the 500-meter radius of all cemeteries in the city, ” Lacuña added in the memorandum.
