MANILA, Philippines 鈥 The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported Wednesday that an undetermined number of dead fish were spotted floating off the coast of Cavite province.
In a statement, the PCG said its substation in Cavite saw the dead fish on Monday near Cavite City鈥檚 Barangay 61 and that most of them 鈥渨ere initially identified as tilapia.鈥
PCG鈥檚 Marine Environmental Protection and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) personnel took samples of the water and dead fish for laboratory analysis.
The remaining dead fish was turned over to the garbage collector of Cavite City and transported to a Materials Recovery Facility for proper disposal.
BFAR recently warned that the El Ni帽o phenomenon began in June and could reduce dissolved oxygen levels in water, which may lead to fish kill episodes.
