Flood-hit Eastern Samar declares state of calamity

MANILA, Philippines — Eastern Samar has been placed under a state of calamity following endless rains and flooding whipped up by the shear line and low-pressure area (LPA).
In a resolution signed Wednesday, November 22, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Eastern Samar have declared a state of calamity in the province “due to incessant rainfall and massive flooding, caused by the shear line and low-pressure area in the eastern portion of the country.”
The provincial board’s resolution also noted that the state of calamity declaration “is appropriate and proper to extend relief assistance to the affected families, providing them holistic support and to repair/rehabilitate the damage and affected areas.”

Eastern Samar was among the areas severely hit by the shear line and LPA that have brought heavy rains and caused landslides and flooding in the province since early this week, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
Article continues after this advertisementThe Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) said Eastern Samar’s Jipapad municipality was among the worst hit, affecting 2,715 families or 9,913 individuals.

Other towns hit by floods in Eastern Samar include Can-avid, Maslog, Oras, and Arteche.
Eastern Samar’s neighboring province, Northern Samar, was placed under a state of calamity on Tuesday, November 21.
