MANILA, Philippines — Police Lt. Col. Mark Julio Abong, who was arrested for firing his gun outside a Quezon City bar, has been granted temporary freedom after two local courts allowed him to post a total of P177,000 bail.

Maj. Don Don Llapitan, Quezon City Police District Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit (QCPD-CIDU) chief, said Abong posted bail around 3:59 p.m. on Thursday.

“Abong was released from CIDU custody by virtue of a release order issued from Regional Trial Court Branch 221 and Metropolitan Trial Court Branch 31 of Quezon City,” Llapitan told reporters in a Viber message.

Broken down, the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said in a separate statement that Abong’s illegal discharge of firearms has a bail set of P120,000; violation of the gun ban or Omnibus Election Code with P36,000; maltreatment with P3,000; and direct assault upon an agent of person in authority with P18,000.

Abong was slapped with charges of illegal discharge of firearms, alarm and scandal, and violating the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act in relation to the Omnibus Election Code, which was filed before the city’s prosecutor’s office on Sunday.

The police officer was apprehended on November 26 along Scout Rallos corner Scout Tobias Street in Barangay Laging Handa for assaulting a bar server and harassing one of the customers outside the establishment by firing his gun twice.
