Bangus, tilapia prices in NCR stable — BFAR

MANILA, Philippines — Prices of bangus and tilapia in Metro Manila remain stable, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said on Wednesday.

According to the BFAR in a statement, no fluctuations in the prices of the fish were observed.

“Per the latest price monitoring report of the DA-BFAR, which covers 10 major retail markets in Metro Manila, medium-sized bangus sourced from Bulacan and Pangasinan are priced at Php180 per kilo, while medium-sized tilapia sourced from Batangas and Pampanga costs Php120 per kilo,” it said.

Meanwhile, it also noted that farmgate prices of tilapia decreased to P85-88 this week, while farmgate prices of bangus were at P130-140.

However, the agency said that minor price differences may occur from market to market.

“While the general price situation of bangus and tilapia is stable, the Agency notes that minor price differences are possible due to several factors, including varying sizes of unloaded supplies in wet markets as well as the type of the market, […] In addition, secondary markets — which source their supply from primary markets — may sell fisheries products at marked-up prices,” it added.

The BFAR likewise announced that there may be an increase in the supply of local galunggong, or round scad, as the closed fishing season also ends on Wednesday.

“Meanwhile, the DA-BFAR anticipates an increase in the supply of local-fresh galunggong in the markets as Palawan, a major source of galunggong in Luzon, ends its closed fishing season today, January 31,” it added.
