MANILA, Philippines — The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (Tesda) is aiming to retrain public school teachers to teach the technical and vocational education and training (TVET) program in basic education.

In a meeting with Tesda officials, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. instructed Tesda and the Department of Education (DepEd) to harmonize TVET to make students more job-ready.

“We are thinking of retraining our teachers so that they can do TVET programs. So the focus will be on teachers because they need to give them context so that when they do their lesson, lesson plans, they should have the skills,” Tesda Deputy Director General for Policies and Planning Rosanna Urdaneta said, speaking partly in Filipino, in a Palace briefing.

Marcos has ordered the creation of a technical working group for DepEd, the Commission on Higher Education, the Department of Labor and Employment, and Tesda to study the integration of TVET into schools.

“We will do a pilot first because it is not that easy even if we have been in the education sector for a long time, but it is possible, so we need to start it now,” Urdaneta said.
