TAGUM CITY — A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Cagwait town, Surigao del Sur on Friday evening, state seismologists said.

The epicenter of the quake, which hit at around 5:29 p.m., was estimated at 75 kilometers southeast of Cagwait at a depth of 10 kilometers, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

It was recorded at Intensity 3 in Tandag City, Surigao del Sur, and at Intensity 2 in Nabunturan town, Davao de Oro, Phivolcs added.

The provincial disaster risk reduction and management office in Davao del Norte said the tremor was felt at Intensity 2 in the province.

Phivolcs said no damage or aftershocks may be expected from this temblor, which was tectonic in origin.

On Thursday, two moderate quakes measuring 5.6 and 5.3 also rattled Cagwait and nearby areas.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire where earthquakes and volcanic activity are common.
