Jose was a renowned dramatic film and television actress with multiple acting awards. She was the first Filipino and Southeast Asian to win Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival, for her role as a matriarch and meth dealer in Brillante Mendoza鈥檚 Ma鈥 Rosa. MANILA, Philippines 鈥 Senator Jinggoy Estrada on Monday filed a resolution expressing profound sympathy and sincere condolences on the death of veteran actress Jaclyn Jose.

Estrada, who was an actor prior to being senator, called the actress鈥 untimely passing as a 鈥渢ragic loss to the entertainment industry鈥 as he filed the Senate Resolution No. 942.

鈥淓ngraved in the history of Philippine cinema are the awards and recognition for her exceptional skill and talent, and it鈥檚 challenging to match,鈥 the senator said in a statement following Jose鈥檚 death.

Jose, born Mary Jane Santa Ana Guck, is the first and only Filipino and Southeast Asian actress to win Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in the film, Ma鈥 Rosa, in 2016.

According to the senator, Jose鈥檚 Cannes award paved the way for the filing of Senate Bill No. 1032 or the proposed World-Class Filmmakers鈥 Incentives Act which seeks to promote the production of world-class Filipino films by granting tax perks.

Apart from this international award, the actress also received local recognition, including those from Gawad Urian, Luna Awards, Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Awards, and Metro Manila Film Festival.

鈥淪he brought life to her roles, making them feel real and relatable, transcending borders, and touching the hearts of those who watched. Her loss is a tragic one and will be felt deeply by the entire entertainment industry,鈥 Estrada said.

Senator Robin Padilla, who was also an actor, called on his fellow lawmakers to extend their condolences to Jose鈥檚 bereaved family during his manifestation at the Senate on Monday.

The actress died of a heart attack on March 2 at age 60.
