LTO cites 3,500 drivers for traffic violations

Around 3,500 motorists in Metro Manila were apprehended by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) in February.

According to LTO National Capital Region head Roque Verzosa III, they apprehended a total of 3,447 violators in February—lower than the 3,510 apprehended in January.

Most of the 2,026 apprehended motorists were found to have violated Republic Act No. 4136 or the Land Transportation and Traffic Code.

This figure included 301 cases involving driving unregistered motor vehicles, in line with the LTO’s aggressive “no registration, no travel” policy while 591 were caught driving motor vehicles with defective accessories, devices, equipment or parts.

Other significant violations included driving while wearing slippers (314), failure to carry an official receipt or certificate of registration while driving a motor vehicle (225), reckless driving (126), and driving without a valid driver’s license (89).

Other violations

During the same period, 1,009 motorists were apprehended for not using seat belt devices, a violation under RA 8750 (Seat Belts Use Act of 1999); 391 motorists received penalties for not wearing the standard protective motorcycle helmet (RA 10054, or Motorcycle Helmet Act of 2009); 15 for noncompliance with the Children Safety on Motorcycle law (RA 10666), and six for violations of the Anti-Distracted Driving Act (RA 10913).

Meanwhile, enforcers of the Department of Public Works and Highways apprehended 587 motorists for violating RA 8794, or Anti-Overloading Act.

The Philippine National Police’s Highway Patrol Group, meanwhile, flagged 69 individuals for violating RA 10054 and 130 others for various infractions during the same period. INQ
