Army on general who ‘abused’ his wife, kids: ‘We don’t tolerate such acts’

MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Army does not condone or tolerate violence against women.

This view is being expressed after one of its officials’ wife showed up at the Commission on Appointments (CA) to thwart her husband’s appointment due to abuses he allegedly committed.

Tessa Luz Reyes-Sevilla on Tuesday came to the CA confirmation hearing of her husband Ranulfo Sevilla, an Army official gunning to be promoted to the rank of brigadier general in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Sevilla failed to secure his promotion following his wife’s testimony.

Sevilla’s wife alleged that the Army official committed adultery, and that she and her children suffered physical and mental abuses from the military official.

“The Philippine Army under the leadership of Lt. Gen. Roy M. Galido does not condone or tolerate such acts,” Army spokesperson Louie Dema-Ala told in a text message on Wednesday.

Dema-ala further said the Army “has been emphasizing to value the sanctity of a family because they have a big impact in a soldiers’ professional development and personal outlook in life, especially towards his sworn duty to serve the people and the country.”

He added the Army cannot make more comments on Sevilla’s case, since there is already an ongoing legal process against him.

Sevilla currently serves as the Deputy Commander of the AFP’s Special Operations Command in Fort Magsaysay, Nueva Ecija.
