MANILA, Philippines 鈥 The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) inspected several churches in Metro Manila on Maundy Thursday as part of efforts to ensure security during Holy Week 2024.

NCRPO Director General Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. led the inspection of the Shrine of Saint Therese, Baclaran Church, Manila Cathedral, San Agustin Church, Binondo Church, Quiapo Church, Saint Pio of Pietrelcina Chapel, and Real Monasterio de Santa Clara de Manila. He was joined by other NCRPO officials.

鈥淭his undertaking is part of NCRPO鈥檚 initiative to ensure the safety, sanctity, and adherence to the preparations to safeguard communities on this revered observance of Holy Week,鈥 the NCRPO said in a statement.

Before the inspection, Nartatez also participated in the 鈥淩eading of the Passion鈥 in Saint Joseph Chapel in Taguig City.

Holy Week is the most sacred week in the Catholic Church鈥檚 liturgical calendar. The flock commemorates events leading up to Jesus Christ鈥檚 passion, death, and resurrection. It is likewise the time when Christians are encouraged to repent for their sins.

Every year, Filipino Catholics observe the Holy Week, locally known as Semana Santa, which starts on Palm Sunday and ends on Easter Sunday. This year, Holy Week was from March 24 to 30.

The government traditionally declares Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday as non-working holidays.

鈥淭he significance of this endeavor reflects the collaborative effort and the heightened preparation of the National Capital Region Police Office to safeguard the observance of the sacred tradition of Christianity,鈥 the NCRPO said.
