Number coding resumes in Metro Manila on April 1, says MMDA

MANILA, Philippines — The number coding scheme’s implementation is back on Monday, April 1, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) reminded motorists.

The Expanded Unified Vehicular Volume Reduction Program was suspended from March 27 to 29 as the nation observed Holy Week, the most sacred week in the Catholic Church’s liturgical year.

In an advisory, the MMDA said the number coding rule would be enforced from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on weekdays, except on weekends and holidays.

The MMDA noted that under the number coding, “vehicles are prohibited from traveling on the streets of Metro Manila based on the last digit of their license plates during the designated coding hours.”

“Plates ending in 1 and 2 are covered by the coding on Mondays, 3 and 4 on Tuesdays, 5 and 6 on Wednesdays, 7 and 8 on Thursdays, and 9 and on Fridays,” it explained.

But some parts of Metro Manila, including Makati City and some areas of Manila City, do not have window hours to implement the number coding rule.

The MMDA also said that the number coding exempts the following:

  • Public utility vehicles (including tricycles)
  • Transport network vehicle services (TNVS)
  • Motorcycles
  • Garbage trucks
  • Marked government vehicles
  • Fuel trucks
  • Marked media vehicles
  • Fire trucks
  • Ambulances
  • Motor vehicles carrying perishable and/or essential goods
