46ºC heat index logged in Guiuan, Eastern Samar
MANILA, Philippines — The state weather bureau recorded a dangerous heat index of 46ºC (degrees Celsius) in Guiuan, Eastern Samar on Tuesday.
According to the , heat index is “a measure of the contribution that high humidity makes with abnormally high temperatures in reducing the body’s ability to cool itself.”
Pagasa said that a heat index of from 42ºC to 51ºC is under the “danger category,” and warned that it causes heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and even heat stroke with continued exposure.
Two other areas reached “danger” level heat index on Friday – Catarman, Northern Samar and Cotabato City at 42ºC.

Pagasa reminded the public that in times of emergency amid intense heat:
- Move the person to a shady spot and lie him/her down with legs
- elevated.
- If conscious, have them sip cool water.
- Remove clothing, apply cool water to the skin and provide ventilation.
- Apply ice packs to the armpits, wrists, ankles, and groin.
- Bring to a hospital immediately
