MANILA, Philippines –  The Quezon City government has started construction of an  elevated landscaped promenade  that links two of its biggest and iconic parks in the vicinity of Elliptical Road.

“Here in Quezon city, we have plenty of green assets and one of them is the Quezon Memorial Circle (QMC) which we consider as main hub of our “Green Lung Network”, Mayor Joy Belmonte said.

“And this iconic park is being redeveloped with a purposeful design that prioritizes  accessibility and functionality”

Designed by the QC-LGU Architect office in coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the city’s Engineering Office   temporarily closed a portion of the Elliptical Road on Maundy Thursday to install the steel and concrete foundations of the elevated walkway between QMC and nearby Ninoy Aquino Parks and Wildlife Center.

The elevated walkway is environmentally enhanced  and will allow open access to pedestrians  and bikers to cross freely to and  from the QMC, the Parks and Wildlife Center and the  bike lanes around the whole stretch of the Elliptical Road.

“This is  part of our LGU’s commitment  in enhancing diversity as a critical solution to the address the city’s climate agenda,” Belmonte stressed.

“Further, the QC-LGU has committed to expand “green and permeable spaces”  by the year 2030 where there would be 30 to 40 percent increase in the city.” “We will double the number of the present 226 city parks to around 450 parks by year 2030 “. “This is aside from planting endemic and fruit bearing trees in open spaces as part of  our “One Million Trees by 2030 program”, she added.

The elevated promenade was conceptualized in  several meetings last July and November last year  between Belmonte and Environment and Natural Resources Secretary  Antonia Loyzaga, where they discussed opportunities for collaboration in plans for a green Quezon City, the  implementation of the Extended Producer Responsibility Act  of 2022 that amended the Ecological Solid waste Management act  of 2000 , and climate action goals.

Quezon City is thoroughly active in these environmental  efforts and recently launched the first Quezon city Green Awards which aims to showcase best practices on Disaster Risk and Reduction, climate action and sustainability.
