In an announcement on Wednesday, Mayor Elmer Soria said the decision was made due to the anticipated “unconducive” learning environment for the students caused by the projected high heat index in the municipality, aggravated by the scheduled power interruption.

This is to assure the safety of students and teachers given the onset of the dry season, when a dangerous level of heat index is expected, said Lonzanida.

The heat index in the capital town of Iba in this province peaked at 40 degrees Celsius in the past five days and was forecast to reach 40°C again on Thursday, which was slightly higher than 39 °C on Wednesday. INQ
