MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Transportation (DOTr) on Saturday said it will be embarking on a project to improve pedestrian environment along Edsa in the vicinity of four of the busiest stations of the Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT 3).

Transportation Undersecretary for Railways Timothy John Batan said that the $140-million Edsa Greenways Project, to be funded by the Asian Development Bank, will prioritize moving people and improving active transport experience, while encouraging the use of public transportation.

Phase One of the project is a mass transit walkway totaling five kilometers along Edsa in the vicinity of the MRT 3 Balintawak, Cubao, Guadalupe, and Taft stations.

Included in the project are improved pedestrian facilities around the key rail stations, covered and elevated walkways connecting the stations, nearby amenities and transport facilities.

Once completed, the pedestrian infrastructure will be equipped with elevators and monitoring systems. —JEROME ANING
