China rocket launch debris may fall in PH waters – PhilSA
MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) on Friday said that debris from a rocket launch from China may fall in Philippine waters.According to the PhilSA, the Long March 5 rocket was launched at Hainan, China on Friday afternoon.
PhilSA said that debris from the launch may have fallen around 123 nautical miles (NM) away from Bajo de Masinloc, and 55 NM away from Panay Island, Catanduanes.
“Expected debris from the rocket launch was projected to have fallen within the identified drop zones approximately 123 NM away from Bajo de Masinloc and 55 NM away from Panay Island, Catanduanes,” the PhilSA said in its advisory.
The PhilSA added that falling debris may be dangerous to boats or other vessels that may pass through the drop zones.
“While not projected to fall on land features or inhabited areas, falling debris poses danger and potential risk to ships, aircraft, fishing boats, and other vessels that will pass through the drop zone,” it added.
It further warned the public to notify authorities of sightings of suspected debris, and not to come into contact with the debris as these may have toxic substances.
