Comelec reports over 4.2 million deactivated voters

MANILA, Philippines—As of Thursday, over 4.2 million voter registrations had been deactivated for various reasons, according to data from the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

In a message sent to reporters, Comelec chairman George Erwin Garcia said that 4,239,483 registrations were deactivated because of the following:

  • Failure to vote in two successive preceding regular elections, as shown by their voting records – 4,237,054
  • Excluded per court order – 1,829
  • Failure to validate – 595
  • Loss of Filipino citizenship – 3
  • Sentenced by final judgment to suffer imprisonment for not less than one year – 1
  • Sentenced by a final judgment of having committed any crime involving disloyalty to the government or any crime against national security – 1

The more than 4.2 million deactivated voters were removed from the list after the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections held in October last year, Garcia said, adding that the number might still increase in the coming months.
