Officials break ground for new hemodialysis hub

MANILA, Philippines — Speaker Martin Romualdez and House appropriations panel chair Elizaldy Co on Wednesday led the groundbreaking ceremony for the National Kidney Transplant Institute’s (NKTI) new hemodialysis building, which is part of the President’s legacy projects.

The new building, a 13-story edifice, will be built on a 2,900-square-meter portion inside the NKTI compound along the Quezon City Elliptical Road.

The new facility will house and operate 200 new hemodialysis machines that will cater to indigent and private patients from Metro Manila and nearby provinces and accommodate renal patients under hemodialysis with complex medical conditions and those requiring emergency care.

NKTI executive director Rose Marie Liquete said the new building targets thousands of indigent Filipinos who are currently suffering from chronic kidney disease, the seventh leading cause of death among Filipinos.

More than 1 million Filipinos are believed to be suffering from such illnesses and have to undergo regular dialysis. —Krixia Subingsubing
