Private schools seeking tuition hikes, says COCOPEA

PISA results mirror PH education’s lost days, ‘grave crisis’

MANILA, Philippines —  Some private schools are seeking tuition increases for the academic year 2024 to 2025, an association of private schools said on Tuesday.

Kristine Manaog, legal counsel of the Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations of the Philippines (COCOPEA), said in an interview on DZBB 594 that the average tuition increase sought by basic education in higher education schools ranges from 3 percent to 12 percent.

Among the schools that applied for tuition increases were those that applied before and after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Manaog attributed the tuition hike to the rising prices of some commodities.

“The costs of commodities rise so private schools are also affected, their overhead expenses, salaries that need to be kept up, especially for our teachers and employees that only rely on us for their living,” she explained in Filipino.

“Seventy percent of that increase goes to the salaries and only 30 percent goes to the operations of the schools,” she added.
