MANILA, Philippines — An increased seismic activity was recorded at Kanlaon Volcano, the state seismology bureau said on Wednesday.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), 90 volcanic earthquakes at Kanlaon Volcano Network were recorded from July 2, 3:00 pm up to Wednesday noon.

“Most of these earthquakes were generated within a depth of 20 kilometers beneath the southeastern sector of the edifice and consist of five (5) volcano-tectonic events that are produced by rock fracturing and eighty-five (85) weak low-frequency events that indicate the movement of volcanic fluids,” Phivolcs said in its advisory.

“The overall monitoring parameters indicate that magmatic processes beneath the volcano may be driving current unrest, causing increased volcanic earthquake activity, persistently high concentrations of volcanic gas emission, and swelling of the edifice,” it added.

Phivolcs cautioned the public that the volcano is under Alert Level 2, which means that there may be “probable intrusion of magma at depth,” and can result in magmatic eruptions.

On June 3, the Phivolcs recorded an eruption in the volcano.
