Marcos names Manila RTC judge Jaime Santiago as new NBI chief

MANILA, Philippines —  National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Director Jaime Santiago on Wednesday said that the agency will be “proactive” in ensuring that the 2025 national and local elections are secured from hackers.

This was Santiago’s response when asked about the measures the NBI is taking in coordination with the Commission on Elections to ensure the midterm elections are free from irregularities.

“The NBI would be proactive, so the chief of cybercrime and I are really working hand in hand. We always discuss how we can further improve our cybersecurity,” he said in a press conference after a courtesy call with poll body chairman George Erwin Garcia.

“For us, we accept that nothing is impenetrable, nothing can’t be hacked. Our goal is to prevent. As much as possible, we want to make it difficult for these hackers, to detect them before they can carry out their mischief,” Santiago added.

Filipinos are set to elect new sets of leaders in the Senate down to municipal councils across the country on May 12, 2025.

The first-ever parliamentary election in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao is also scheduled on the same day, with 80 seats in Parliament, including 40 party representatives, 32 district representatives, and eight sectoral representatives, expected to be filled.
