MANILA, Philippines — Metro Manila and other areas nearby were under Orange Rainfall Warning and may experience floods on Tuesday afternoon, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said.

As of 2:00 p.m., Pagasa said the southwest monsoon, which is locally called habagat. was affecting Metro Manila, Cavite, Bataan, and Zambales, as well as parts of Batangas such as the towns of Tuy, Nasugbu, Lian, Calatagan, and Balayan.

Areas under the Orange Rainfall Warning will receive between 15 millimeters (mm) and 30 mm of rain for the next two hours, according to the state weather agency. Severe rains, flooding, and landslides may occur in areas under the Orange Rainfall Warning.

A Yellow Rainfall Warning, meanwhile, was raised over Rizal, Bulacan, Pampanga, Tarlac, Laguna, and the rest of Batangas, Pagasa noted, adding that flooding is possible in low-lying areas of these provinces.

Places under the Yellow Rainfall Warning will experience between 7.5 mm and 15 mm of rain within an hour which may continue in the next two hours.

According to Pagasa’s 11 a.m. bulletin, Typhoon Carina (International name: Gaemi) slightly intensified and continued to boost the southwest monsoon.

The typhoon was last located 320 kilometers east of Basco, Batanes, packing maximum sustained winds of 140 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness up to 170 kph.

Pagasa placed Batanes towns Itbayat, Basco, Mahateo, Uyagan, and Ivana under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 2. It also raised TCWS No. 1 over the following areas:

  • The rest of Batanes (Sabtang)
  • Cagayan including Babuyan Islands
  • Eastern portion of Isabela (Divilacan, Palanan, Maconacon, Dinapigue, Tumauini, Ilagan City, San Mariano,
  • Cabagan, San Pablo, Santa Maria)
  • Northern portion of Apayao (Calanasan, Luna, Pudtol, Flora, Santa Marcela)
  • Northern portion of Ilocos Norte (Pagudpud, Bangui, Adams, Dumalneg, Burgos, Vintar)
  • Northern portion of Aurora (Dilasag, Casiguran)
  • Polillo Islands
  • Calaguas Island
  • Northern portion of Catanduanes (Pandan, Bangamanoc, Panganiban, Viga, Gigmoto, Caramoran)
