MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has declared Aug. 30 a special nonworking holiday in San Juan City in commemoration of the Battle of Pinaglabanan, the first major battle of the Philippine Revolution of 1896.

The holiday was embodied in Proclamation No. 649, dated Aug. 8. The failed attack was meant to capture weapons from the targeted powder magazine to arm about 1,000 men.

But the weapons were earlier distributed to Spanish troops. In 1974, the Pinaglabanan Memorial Shrine was unveiled along Pinaglabanan Street and the San Juan City government also opened a museum within the shrine in 2006. —Julie M. Aurelio
